IMDb is a magical place for those who love listing and voting. The Wire, meanwhile, is 60 hours of fabulous storytelling with hundreds of fascinating characters and performers.

So it is no surprise that some of these IMDb-using Wire-maniacs have begun voting on the best characters in the show’s history. Of course, there must be loads of polls like this floating around, but this one stands apart in two important ways:
1. The thread launcher ‘Everyday-Struggler’ asked for a top 3, significant on a show with a million-bajillion memorable characters.
2. I have taken the time to total up the results.
I awarded each character three points for a 1st place vote, two points for 2nd place, and one point for third place. In the event that a voter did not specify an order, all three characters received a point and a half. And since many users were compelled to include honorable mentions, any HM vote, or any ordered vote past #3 was given a point.
Finally, a small number of users also included dislikes. Any character to receive a dislike vote had a point subtracted from his or her total.
THE RESULTS
Most 1st place votes: Omar, 33–Stringer, 9–Bodie, 7–McNulty, 6–Bunk and D’Angelo, 4

Most 2nd place votes: Omar, 14–McNulty, 10–Bubbles and Lester, 8–Bodie, 7–Bunk, 6

A blog called “The Wire: Fight for the Crown” has set out to determine the greatest Wire character all-time, NCAA bracket style. As an enormous enthusiast for The Wire, brackets, and lists, I strongly recommend keeping an eye on this site.
My predictions, based on their brackets:
ELITE EIGHT
McNulty v. Colvin…Bunk v. Lester…Bubbs v. Omar…Bodie v. Stringer
FINAL FOUR
McNulty, Bunk, Omar, Stringer
CHAMPIONSHIP
Bunk vs. Omar
CHAMPION
Omar
Not necessarily my picks; just my prediction based on the brackets. Of course, the real winner is us, the Wire fans of the world.
I recently got addicted to The Wire…have watched first 2 seasons in 2 weeks…bought a portbable DVD to watch season 3 while I am in the Oregon wild…I cannot BELIEVE the characters. I doubt I will ever be satisfied watching a network crime drama again, Omar is a GREAT choice for #1, but I think Kima shouldn’t be in the ‘negative’ group.
Yeah, weird the amount of flack Kima gets, considering the Barksdale investigation got rolling first through her and Jimmy… that her shooting was one of the most compelling/gripping/memorable moments in the series… that she is a five season character… that she will f up frat boys when needed… that she can hold her liquor and nab the babes… and that her “Goodnight Moon” scene is one of the sweetest, loveliest scenes the show ever had.
i recently brought an ipad and joined a gym and hoped to find a good series to watch, the wire was recommended. Inside 8 weeks i’ve lost 31lbs due to strictly watching only in front of the cross trainer, I have 5 episodes of series five left…. help!!! recommendations please.
Tried to find an argument for Kima and was left thinking Prez would be higher on my list of favourites. Got to go with the majority Omar steals every scene.
Hi Ian! I’m sorry I only just now saw this comment. What did you end up choosing?
I am not a big TV man — I don’t jump on every series that gains traction with popular & critical audiences. That said, I watched Breaking Bad and it is marvelous. After that… Mad Men is okay, but it’s also the only other show I’ve watched.
